Painted Wolf LLC builds open-source AI coding tools that run where you do. Our flagship is Painted Wolf Code: an AI coding agent that runs on your hardware, connects to the model providers you already pay for, and keeps your code local. Open source, top to bottom.

How it’s built

Painted Wolf Code is not a fork of an existing editor. It is a desktop shell written in Rust over a local engine written in Go, built from scratch — which means no inherited extension model to stay compatible with, no upstream to wait on, and a security boundary designed as one piece rather than retrofitted around somebody else’s.

That freedom is what the rest of the product rests on. A coordinator delegates to specialist agents in parallel; on macOS, every command runs inside its own operating-system sandbox; answers are checked against what the agent actually read. Above that compiled boundary, the agents, workflows, prompts, and policy rules ship as extension packs of plain YAML you can fork, replace, or install from a git URL. Pack-defined guardrails are written in Open Agent Rules, an open standard with its own site, schemas, and conformance corpus; we implement it, we don’t own it.

A note on real painted wolves

The African painted wolf — Lycaon pictus, also known as the African wild dog — hunts in tightly coordinated packs.
